  • Freedom combines with certainty and determination

January begins with a five planet stellium in perhaps the most misunderstood and mysterious sign of the zodiac – Capricorn. I can already hear Sea Goats out there heave a collective sign of relief that finally someone is acknowledging the fact that they are more than just work horses – or stubborn goats. Horses is a theme I will come back to as we will enter the Chinese New Year of the Green Horse at the end of the month. For now – let’s stick with the mysteries of the Sea Goat who is simultaneously able to scale rocky peaks yet navigate oceans. Whatever task a Capricorn sets they will approach it with dedication and determination no matter what terrain they may have to navigate. They’re not afraid of hard work and this is the sign which doesn’t delude itself that success will follow if they just recite a few affirmations. Yes, that will help and sustain them but it is the hard work they put in that ensures the success. And success and rewards that come from this is part of the Capricorn mystique due to its associations with the cornucopia – the overflowing ‘horn of plenty’. Capricorn is all about deferred gratification. It’s not that they don’t know how to enjoy themselves – of course they do. But they are willing to wait to do so unlike their next door sign of Sagittarius for whom instant gratification takes too long. The month begins with the Sun, Moon (a new Super Moon), Mercury and Pluto all conjunct in Capricorn and squaring off Mars in Libra, Jupiter in Cancer and Uranus in Aries. We’re being asked to look at what we commit to and what stands the test of time with a caveat – what is established may not need to be discarded. There is no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. However, we should expect tangible demonstrations of what has been lived out and does need to change. With Venus also in here and retrograde its all about the lessons we have learned through love. Jupiter is also retrograde in nurturing Cancer bringing these lessons close to home for many of us when it makes an exact opposition to the Sun on the 5th and also forms a Grand Water Trine the same day. We may see those realms Capricorn can navigate – Earth and Water feature in some way in the news.

Mercury zooms off into Aquarius from the 11th – the same day retrograde Venus encounters the Sun in Capricorn and makes an interesting aspect to Saturn in Scorpio. Wait a few more days and we’ll see a full Moon take place in its ruling sign of Cancer. What needs to transform and what can stand the test of time may now be all too apparent.

The Sun now moves off into free-thinking, freedom loving Aquarius and let’s talk about the Chinese New Year – a Green or Wood Horse. Horses represent freedom and human evolution and mobility has been inextricably tied to our relationship with the horse. Many of us are going to find this year one of liberation thanks to this but we can combine this with the essence of Capricorn’s determination and ability to chart a course whether it’s up a mountain or across an ocean to get where they need to go – no matter how long the voyage or climb may take them. Those of you who actually ride horses understand that you look in the direction you want your horse to go and your horse responds. Those of you who have done an advanced driving course also know that one of the things they teach you if you get into trouble is to look in the direction away from the trouble not at it and you hands will automatically turn the wheel in that direction without you even thinking about it. So, the message of the Year of the Horse is to know where you want to get to and keep looking towards that goal.

Capricorn’s most mystical and secret power is the fact they understand on a soul level that structure and determination are actually the keys to freedom – not the reverse. What sounds boring and mundane actually liberates. Riding a horse takes discipline but also conveys freedom. Clever ,clever Capricorn. This combined with the innovative thinking of Aquarius and a freedom-enhancing Year of the Horse can put us all on the right path provided we keep focussed on the direction we want to head in.

Mercury now heads off into spiritual Pisces and can deliver you directions on how to get there the same day Venus turns direct in Capricorn. Take the next step on your journey with love.
