What Does Being Born on the Cusp REALLY Mean?

If you were born at the very start or the very end of a zodiac sign chances are at some point or another you have described yourself as being born ‘on the cusp’. Perhaps you even see quite clearly in yourself the qualities of each sign and added to that there may be confusion as to when your Sun sign actually begins and ends as you may have noticed when you read horoscopes in newspapers and magazines that sometimes this varies by a day or so from year to year – merely adding to what I term ‘cusp confusion’!

So, if you are one of the many people out there suffering from cusp confusion and needing some clarity as well as wanting to get the most from your astrology forecasts here then read on as this article is especially for you!

First of all – there is no such thing as being born ‘on the cusp’. The Sun was definitely in one sign or the other on the day you were born. You are not on the ‘cusp’ of Cancer and Leo – you are either a Cancer or a Leo. The reason that the dates the Sun enters a particular sign appears to vary from year to year in the newspapers when you read your forecast is that there are slight variations produced by the Earth’s rotation around the Sun each year and newspapers don’t have the space to publish the variations between these every year. But take it from me – your Sun sign does not vary and you can easily discover which sign your Sun occupied the day you were born by looking up the date in an ephemeris on line. That’s your sign.

The reason why many people born on the so-called ‘cusp’ exhibit characteristics of both signs is usually because they have a personal planet in the next door sign. They can even have the next door sign as their rising sign which again accounts for it. Obviously if you know your time of birth you can generate your chart and find out. However, the most likely explanation is the planet Mercury. As we know, Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and then we have his three-times-a-year retrograde periods. So, in a birthchart Mercury is never far away from our natal Sun – just as he is never far away from the Sun in reality. In a chart Mercury can be no further from our Sun than the next door sign! So, if you are born under the sign of Libra for example – no matter whether you are on the ‘cusp’ of Virgo and Libra or Libra and Scorpio your natal Mercury can only be in one of three signs – Virgo, Libra or Scorpio. So, you can see if you were actually born with your Sun at 30 degrees of Virgo – right at the end of the sign and on the ‘cusp’ – you could have Mercury happily sitting in Libra which would account for you having some Libran characteristics! If you generate your birthchart whether you know your time or birth or not, you will be able to see if you have Mercury or indeed any other planet in an adjacent sign which would account for you having some of that sign’s qualities.

If you are still unsure about where exactly your Sun was the day you were born, then one of our astrologers would be happy to help you. Being born on the cusp of a sign is no different to the Sun occupying an earlier degree of that sign. It is the planets in the other signs and houses which add the wonderful shades and dimensions to our lives that make us the fascinating, complex and unique individuals that we are – just think of them as making up the amazing energy vibration that has resulted in you. Your chart shows that you are far more than just your Sun sign – cusp or not. Our planets help make us the best of all possible worlds.
